12 Days of Christmas Crafting - Day 7 Candy Cane Soap

Christmas can be such an expensive time of year to find the right something for that special someone. But if you can get a little creative, buy your supplies at Michael's (don't forget to download your 40% off coupon before you go), spend a little time in the kitchen and you can have some really great and unique Christmas gifts. This is Candy Cane Soap. It's an idea I had originally seen in a Martha Stewart Living Magazine a few years back. I modified how I made it and so I'll share with you how easy and fun this is to do. Supplies you will need to make this project:
glycerin soap - 3 squares of solid white and two squares of clear (You can purchase it at Michael's)
Red and Yellow coloring
Peppermint Essential Oil - I found this at a health food store
A soap mold
The first layer is going to be the solid white. Drop one square of soap into a glass cup and microwave for 20 seconds. Drop in 1 drop of the peppermint essential oil and stir with a knife. Pour the first layer into the mold. I then put the mold into the fridge to speed up the hardening process.
Once the first layer is solid enough to pour on the next layer. Drop a clear cube of soap into a glass cup. Drop in two drops of red coloring and one drop of yellow ( you'll have to play with your colouring to get the red looking the way you want).
Microwave for 20 seconds. Stir it with a knife when it comes out.

Pour the second layer over the first and put the tray in the fridge to let it cool. Repeat these steps until you have the desired amount of layers.
This is what it will look like when your done. It will take a good 30 minutes or more for it to properly set. Be sure to let it set you want your soap to hold it's shape.
Pop the soap out of the mold and wrap it snug in plastic wrap.
You can then gift wrap it in these handy boxes and it makes a lovely Christmas Gift, that smells like this wonderful season. If you wanted you could also google the story behind the Candy Cane and tuck it inside the box as well.
Happy Creating, Meaghan, Monica and Nancy
